Garba Etiquette 101: The Unwritten Rules of the Floor

Every garba floor runs on a set of unwritten rules. Learn them and you'll dance smoother, make friends faster, and never be 'that person' in the circle.

Garba has a flow to it — a shared rhythm that keeps hundreds of people moving in harmony. Most of it is never spelled out, but everyone follows it. Here are the unwritten rules that'll make you look like a regular.

Move with the circle

Everyone dances in the same direction. Pick it up and stay in the lane — cutting across the circle or reversing is the fastest way to cause a pileup. Keep your spacing and match the pace of the dancers around you.

Respect the devotional opening

The slower folk garba that opens the night is devotional. Keep phones down, keep it respectful, and join the circle rather than treating it as a warm-up act.

Dandiya safety

  • Tap sticks, don't swing them like swords — it's a rhythm, not a duel.
  • Mind your radius so you don't catch a neighbor.
  • If you drop a stick, step out to grab it rather than stopping the flow.

Floor courtesy

  • Welcome newcomers — show them the step if they're lost.
  • Step to the edge if you need a break or want to film.
  • Hydrate and pace yourself; the best dancers are still standing at 1 a.m.
